All-New Ranger wins AMI Insurance NZ autocar Overall Car of the Year 2011

Tue, Nov 22, 2011

The All-New Ford Focus and All-New Ford Ranger have come out winners in the AMI Insurance and NZ autocar Car of the Year awards held last Friday night in Auckland.

The all-new Focus pulled in the category win for AMI NZ autocar Compact Car of the Year 2011. The all-new Ranger won AMI NZ autocar SUV of the Year 2011 category and also brought home the highly-coveted AMI NZ autocar Overall Car of the Year 2011.

“Ford is very proud to have received these awards. The Focus and Ranger are two very important global vehicles for Ford, with an impressive amount of investment, design and engineering behind them both,” said Chris Masterson, Marketing Manager, Ford New Zealand.

Masterson said the Overall Car of the Year award for the all-new Ranger, the first time a ute has won the overall award, reflects how well the vehicle meets customers’ needs for a vehicle that is more than just a hard-working ute.

“Winning the Overall Car of the Year speaks volumes for the many roles the new Ranger can fill,” added Masterson. “It’s extremely capable on the work site but equally comfortable and safe serving as the family road trip vehicle towing the boat or caravan.”

NZ Autocar editor and chief judge, Kyle Cassidy, said that the Ranger scored highly in the practicality and value categories, but also ranked strongly for driving dynamics and performance, highlighting its all-round capabilities.

"Ranger was an easy choice as our SUV of the Year and the way it performed over the two days astounded the judges," he commented. "The big Ford is a talented all-rounder. It’s a genuine workhorse that also performs the role of a roomy family vehicle after hours. That it offers car-like comfort and dynamics, and is packed with safety features sealed its win.”

TV3’s Shaun Summerfield, another of the judges, said of the Ranger “It’s the best looking ute ever sold here, but it’s much more than just a pretty face. The interior is great and offers features you don’t expect in this segment or at this price.”

Another judge, Rob Maetzig from the Taranaki Daily News, commented, "Double Cab utes are today’s SUVs and the Ranger is the best of the bunch." NZ Autocar’s Senior Editor, Peter Louisson, said “The Ranger cruises effortlessly, and the way it can boogie in the bends defies belief.”

The Ford Ranger was up against five other vehicles for the overall AMI Insurance NZ Autocar Car of the Year Award. The award process identifies the best new car released in the preceding 12 months.

Six judges took the cars on a rigorous road drive through the middle of the North Island, covering 1000kms in two days. Each car received a combined score out of 100 and was judged on design, performance, driving dynamics, practicality and value. The category winners were scored and selected by the judges from new models launched in New Zealand between 1 November 2010 and 1 November 2011.
